D.1:The Hills of Montmartre

On our day off from school, a group of us decided to go up to Montmatre to see what the neighborhood had to offer. We decided to loosely follow a tour book's walking tour. We started at the Abbesses metro stop. This is one of the only two original Art Noubeau metro stops designed by French architect Hector Guimard still remaining. There was also original mural artwork going up (and up) the winding stairs to the top. From the metro's stairs alone you already got a feel for just how hilly and high "la butte" really is. Luckily for us on the way back home when we were VERY tired we learned there was an elevator to take us down to the metro thank goodness. From the metro stop, we stopped at a cute rust red church that had turquoise detailing and some interesting glass work called the St. Jean de Montmatre. From there we found some interesting "artwork" of a face and hands in a 'stick-em-up' sort of motion on the side of an ATM machine. We continued uo the streets to La Beteau Lavoir where Picasso stayed and painted some of his most notable artworks. We continued up and up until we finally reached the Sacre Coeur, (we skipped the funiculaire in order to see the sights along the way). After taking pictures we went inside and sat down to take everything in. We learned that for 125 years there has been someone continuously praying in the basilica. Once back outside, we wandered through a food market and had some delicious strawberries and made our way to Place du Tertre where I bought a piece of original artwork. Although my feet are now tired from all the walking over the weekend, it was worth every bit of pain to see all the wonderful things I did with some wonderful people.
